Africa-Press – Eswatini. Eswatini has taken a bold step toward improving the nation’s health and nutrition as the Ministry of Health, through the Eswatini National Nutrition Council (ENNC), validated the Food-Based Dietary Guidelines (FBDGs) a framework designed to inspire healthier eating habits and combat malnutrition in all its forms.
The validation workshop, held with support from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Country Office and the Subregional Office for Southern Africa, brought together stakeholders from various ministries, development partners, and civil society organizations to review and refine the draft guidelines. The process ensured that the recommendations are culturally relevant, practical, and aligned with Eswatini’s dietary patterns.
Speaking during an interview on October 16, 2025, Nokwazi Dlamini, Communications Officer at the Eswatini National Nutrition Council, said the FBDGs mark a turning point in how the country approaches nutrition and wellness. “The Food-Based Dietary Guidelines are not just about what we eat they are about changing how we think about food, nutrition, and well-being as a country,” she explained.
According to Dlamini, the FBDGs are an essential tool to address both undernutrition and the growing burden of diet-related non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity. “They are practical, evidence-based, and easy to apply in our daily lives. Our goal is to ensure that every Liswati has access to accurate information that supports a balanced and nutritious diet,” she explained.
The guidelines advocate for increased consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and indigenous foods while discouraging excessive intake of salt, sugar, and saturated fats. By promoting balanced diets and active living, they aim to reduce preventable illnesses and enhance the population’s overall well-being.
Dlamini further highlighted that the validated guidelines will serve as a cornerstone for nutrition education and public awareness. “We want these guidelines to reach every home, school, and community health facility,” she said. “Through education, awareness campaigns, and policy integration, we aim to create a society that values healthy living and makes informed food choices.”
Crucially, the initiative also supports Eswatini’s commitment to the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement and the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those linked to good health, food security, and sustainable agriculture.
Following validation, the Ministry of Health will move to launch the FBDGs nationwide, supported by training programs, communication materials, and outreach campaigns, ushering in a new era of nutrition awareness and healthier living for all Emaswati.
