Africa-Press – Eswatini. In an effort to enhance connectivity and communication, Eswatini is working towards a digitally-inclusive future.

To achieve this, Eswatini Government has mandated the Eswatini Communications Commission (ESCCOM) to ensure that this dream is realised.

Under the leadership of Mvilawemphi Dlamini, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ESCCOM, the Kingdom of Eswatini is making significant strides towards a digitally inclusive future. Dlamini, with his extensive background in information systems management, has spearheaded various initiatives aimed at transforming the digital landscape in the region.

Commitment to Universal Access

Dlamini emphasises the mission of ESCCOM to ensure universal access to digital resources. This commitment is evident through their universal access initiatives, which have successfully equipped disability centres and rural schools with computer labs. These efforts are designed to empower communities and ensure that no one is left behind in the digital revolution, allowing students to focus on their academic needs without distractions from social media.

Connectivity and Digital Hubs

Connectivity is a core focus of ESCCOM’s projects. The commission has upgraded all mobile sites in Eswatini to 4G, providing reliable broadband access across the nation. In partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), ESCCOM has established digital hubs in semi-rural areas, offering communities not only internet access but also digital skills training and coding classes.

Cybersecurity Measures

To protect these advancements, ESCCOM is prioritising cybersecurity. Dlamini notes that they are developing frameworks to safeguard user data and combat cyber threats. Collaborations with international regulators and local entities, including the police and central bank, enhance these cybersecurity efforts.

Long-term Projects

ESCCOM is also focused on long-term initiatives, such as the National Addressing System, which aims to standardise addresses across Eswatini. This system is expected to streamline services and foster economic activity. Additionally, the ‘Government in Your Hand’ project is part of their strategy to create a robust digital ecosystem.

Educational Digitisation

In collaboration with the Ministry of Education, ESCCOM is working to digitize the secondary and high school syllabus. This strategic move ensures that students can access technology in a meaningful way, moving away from simply distributing laptops without a clear digital strategy. Dlamini highlights that this approach allows students to engage with content specifically designed for their educational needs.

Through these initiatives, ESCCOM is positioning itself as a transformative force in Eswatini, paving the way for a more inclusive and digitally empowered society.
