EU HONOURS YOUTH POWERING ESWATINI’S GREEN FUTURE

Africa-Press – Eswatini. Young innovators from across the country were celebrated at Sibane Sami Hotel in Ezulwini, where the European Union (EU) awarded cash prizes, gifts, and certificates to outstanding participants of the Re-Think Waste Youth Challenge, a competition aimed at promoting the green agenda and advancing the circular economy in Eswatini.

The ceremony, held on Friday, 12 December 2025, recognised the creativity and commitment of young people who took part in the challenge, which formed part of the EU Green Diplomacy Weeks hosted in October and November.

The competition encouraged the youth to become eco-educators by influencing how families, schools and communities understand waste, recycling, and sustainable living. Entrants were required to submit innovative content that teaches smart waste habits and simplifies recycling and circular economy concepts. Their work was also expected to provoke reflection on waste consumption and inspire practical solutions for a cleaner and climate smart Eswatini.

Winners were announced across three categories. In the Eco Educator Award, Sibongumenzi Ntuli took first prize, while Setsabile Nkambule emerged as runner-up. The Creative Communicator Award was won by Setsabile Nkambule, with Sicalo Maziya taking second place. For the Community Impact Award, Siyabonga Nxumalo claimed the top spot and Andile Khumalo secured the runner-up position. All other participants received certificates of participation to acknowledge their effort and commitment.

Presenting the prizes, EU Ambassador to Eswatini, Karsten Mecklenburg, applauded the participants for their innovation and passion. He expressed hope that they would return to their communities and turn their ideas into action, reinforcing national efforts to protect the environment and combat climate change. A representative from the Eswatini Environment Authority also attended the ceremony, further highlighting the importance of partnerships in environmental protection.

The green agenda offers numerous benefits, including reduced pollution, improved public health, job creation through green industries, and the conservation of natural resources. By embracing recycling, responsible consumption and circular living, communities can lower waste volumes, safeguard ecosystems and build resilience against climate change. Today’s celebration demonstrated how empowered youth can play a vital role in driving these positive changes for a sustainable future.
