Africa-Press – Eswatini. The European Union (EU) in Eswatini and the International Trade Centre (ITC) have renewed their support for the Kingdom of Eswatini to implement the EU-SADC Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) over the next five years. The partnership aims to provide a structured approach for the country to increase exports, diversify products, and strengthen small and medium sized enterprises (MSMEs) in regional and global markets.
EU Ambassador to Eswatini, Karsten Mecklenburg, described the EPA as more than just a trade agreement. He said: “The EU-SADC EPA is not just a trade agreement, but a platform for growth, investment, and sustainable development.
This updated implementation strategy and action plan offers Eswatini a clear roadmap to increase exports to the EU, diversify products, and ensure that MSMEs benefit fully from regional and global value chains. The EU, together with ITC, will continue to provide the technical and financial support needed to translate this strategy into tangible results.”
The Under Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Trade, Ncebile Nhlabatsi, emphasised the alignment of the action plan with national policies. She said “This action plan aligns with our policies, will strengthen institutions, and build the capacity of our private sector so that Eswatini can fully utilize the opportunities of the EPA. With a focus on MSMEs, standards compliance, and export readiness, we are confident this plan will contribute to job creation, economic diversification, and sustainable growth.”
This initiative forms part of the ‘Eswatini: Promoting Growth through Competitive Alliances’ programme, implemented by ITC in partnership with the EU and the Eswatini Government. It seeks to support small farmers, entrepreneurs, and artisans in leveraging export led growth while increasing the country’s competitiveness in regional and international markets.
With the continued backing of the EU and ITC, Eswatini is well positioned to expand its exports, diversify product offerings, and strengthen its presence in both regional and global value chains.
