Africa-Press – Eswatini. In a moment that highlighted SADC’s commitment to democracy and regional stability, Honourable Themba N. Masuku, former Deputy Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Eswatini, officially launched the SADC Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM) to Malawi’s 2025 General Election on 10 September 2025.

The launch took place at the prestigious Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe, Malawi, where Honourable Masuku outlined the mission’s mandate: ensuring that Malawi’s elections are conducted in line with the SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections (2021). He emphasized the importance of transparency, fairness, and inclusivity as cornerstones of democratic practice in the region.

Supporting him at the event were high-level dignitaries including:

• Prof. Kula Ishmael Theletsane, Director of Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Affairs at the SADC Secretariat,

• Ambassador Mlondi Dlamini from the Kingdom of Eswatini,

• Ms. Zaynab Turuku from the United Republic of Tanzania, and

• Members of the SADC Electoral Advisory Council, Dr. Leonard Sesa and Advocate Notemba Tjipueja.

The appointment of Honourable Masuku as Head of Mission was made by His Majesty King Mswati III, the Incoming Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation. His leadership brings a wealth of experience and dedication to ensuring the integrity of Malawi’s Presidential, Parliamentary, and Local Government Elections scheduled for 16 September 2025.

This launch marks yet another milestone in SADC’s role of promoting peace, stability, and democratic governance across the region.
