Africa-Press – Eswatini. Dumsani Masondo, President of the Eswatini National Agriculture Union (ESNAU) says they appreciated the government’s assistance but the prices were still too high.
Masondo said learning that government will now contribute only 50 per cent towards the input subsidy programme came as a shock to them as they struggled even to afford the 35 per cent (E4 900) they were paying in the previous season. The president said this would only benefit those farmers who already had money and could afford paying the E 5 700 plus the E400 for the tractor hire service.
Decisions
Masondo said as farmers they were not impressed by the fact that they were not involved when decisions affecting them as farmers were made. He said government often made decisions, claiming to have engaged the farmers while it was not the case.
Wishes
He said as farmers they were not saying, the prices should not go up given the prevailing economic situation of the country and the world at large, but they were asking to be fully engaged in order for them to state their wishes and ideas as well.
