Drawing strength from his family’s history, Zwelakhe revived his late grandmother’s small spaza shop, which once offered only snacks and airtime. With careful listening to his community’s needs, he began stocking bread, sugar, rice, and other essentials, gradually transforming the shop into a vibrant neighborhood grocery.
But Zwelakhe didn’t stop there. Recognizing the growing demand for convenience, he added mobile money services, turning the spaza into a vital hub for locals. While some criticism arose over his license, Zwelakhe faced it head-on, seeing challenges as motivation rather than setbacks.
“It’s the negativity that inspired me to do great things,” he reflects, highlighting how every obstacle fueled his determination. Applying for the proper grocery license, he pushed forward, reinvesting profits and building his dream brick by brick.
Today, Zwelakhe’s once-tiny spaza has blossomed into a fully-fledged grocery store, complete with ample space, diverse goods, and a proud, resilient spirit behind its counters. His story is a shining example of how passion, perseverance, and a willingness to adapt can turn even the simplest beginnings into a powerful success.
