Africa-Press – Eswatini. The Government of Eswatini has reiterated its commitment to combating money laundering and the financing of terrorism.

This assurance was given by Minister of Finance Neal Rijkenberg during the official opening of a workshop for parliamentarians on money laundering, held at Happy Valley Hotel, Ezulwini, on 7 July 2025.

The two-day Eastern and Southern Africa Anti-Money Laundering Group (ESAAMLG) Parliamentary Workshop brings together Members of Parliament, the Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) Council, technical committees, and the ESAAMLG Secretariat. The aim is to strengthen Eswatini’s national response to money laundering, terrorist financing, and proliferation financing.

In his remarks, Rijkenberg highlighted the significant progress Eswatini has made through the enactment of the Anti-Money Laundering, Counter Financing of Terrorism and Proliferation Financing (Miscellaneous Amendments) Act, 2024.

“This workshop is not only timely—it is essential. As threats evolve, so must our collective response. His Majesty’s Government remains committed to a robust AML/CFT framework that protects the integrity of our financial system,” said Rijkenberg.

The workshop aims to enhance the understanding of Parliament’s role in upholding financial security and ensuring effective oversight of AML/CFT frameworks. Over the course of the programme, Members of Parliament will engage in discussions on:

Understanding terrorism financing and Eswatini’s international obligations;

Oversight of AML/CFT institutions and frameworks;

Ratification and implementation of relevant international conventions;

Parliamentary responsibility in law reform, strategic resourcing, and policy oversight.

The event comes at a critical time, as countries in the region continue to face increasing challenges from global financial crimes. Strengthening national systems and ensuring alignment with international standards remain key priorities for governments across the Eastern and Southern African region.

The Minister concluded by calling on all stakeholders to work together in protecting Eswatini’s financial system and upholding the country’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and international cooperation.
