Africa-Press – Eswatini. The Government of Eswatini, through the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, joined the world in commemorating International White Cane Day at St. Joseph’s Mission School.

The event was commemorated on Wednesday, October 15, 2025. Held under the theme “Clear the Way: Creating an Inclusive Environment for Persons with Visual Impairment in Eswatini,” the event brought together over 200 participants, including government representatives, development partners, school-going children, teachers, parents, and members of the community.

The commemoration, organised in partnership with the Eswatini Association of the Visually Impaired Persons and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), celebrated the achievements and rights of persons with visual impairment while raising awareness about accessibility and independence.

International White Cane Day, observed annually on October 15, celebrates the independence and mobility of persons with visual impairment. The white cane, a symbol of freedom and empowerment, reminds societies of the importance of removing barriers and creating environments where everyone can move safely, participate fully, and live with dignity.

The Deputy Prime Minister’s representative, Makhosi Simelane, reaffirmed government’s commitment to “clear the way” for persons with visual impairment, ensuring their inclusion across all sectors. He highlighted progress in seven key areas including health, education, employment, infrastructure, ICT, social protection, and climate action.

Representing the UN Eswatini Resident Coordinator, UNFPA Head of Office Margaret Thwala-Tembe commended the Government of Eswatini and the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office for their continued efforts in promoting inclusivity. She expressed appreciation for initiatives such as awareness campaigns, the distribution of white canes, the development of inclusive education programmes, and the implementation of the Persons with Disabilities Act and the National Disability Plan of Action.

Through ongoing partnerships with organisations such as UNFPA and the Global Disability Fund (GDF), Eswatini continues to advance disability inclusion and uphold its commitment to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
