As the nation unites for the annual Umhlanga Reed Dance, Government has announced the postponement of school opening to allow this cultural treasure to proceed undisturbed.
Minister of Education and Training, Owen Nxumalo, revealed in a press briefing at the Ministry’s conference room that schools will now reopen on September 16, 2025. Originally, schools were scheduled to open on September 9, but the date clashed with the Umhlanga celebrations scheduled for 2–8 September.
A Cultural and Educational Balance
Nxumalo explained that the decision was made with the well-being of maidens in mind, ensuring they have sufficient time to fully participate in the Reed Dance and later prepare for school without pressure.
“We recognise the importance of this sacred tradition to our nation. The postponement allows maidens to honour their cultural responsibilities and still return to school ready and refreshed,” said Nxumalo.
