Africa-Press – Eswatini. In a celebration of excellence, commitment, and community impact, logistics powerhouse Grindrod marked two years of its successful Bassopa Safety Culture Campaign, while unveiling a bold new operational framework dubbed “The Grindrod Way.”

The vibrant event, held across Grindrod’s facilities in Eswatini, Mozambique, and South Africa, brought together employees, contractors, strategic partners, and cultural performers to reflect on remarkable milestones. Among the key partners was Eswatini Railways (ESR), whose collaboration has been instrumental in driving the success of Grindrod’s operations through the Eswatini corridor.

A Culture of Safety and Excellence

Since the Bassopa campaign’s inception in 2023, the company has achieved a 62% reduction in Lost Time Injuries (LTI) and a 47% improvement in LTIFR, thanks to strong peer accountability, open communication, and proactive near-miss reporting. These results are not just numbers, they represent safer workplaces and empowered teams.

Mkhululi Dlamini, Head of Operations for Eswatini and Sidings, highlighted the significance of this achievement:

“Our project has successfully moved nearly 4 million tonnes of cargo from Sidvokodvo to the Port of Maputo, delivering close to four years of injury-free operations. This represents more than 60 vessels routed through the Eswatini corridor and the support of nearly 200 local transporters.”

Beyond logistics, the ripple effects have been transformative: local fuel stations have seen increased activity, road tolls have boosted revenue, informal businesses have flourished, and nearly 100 Emaswati have gained meaningful employment.

Introducing ‘The Grindrod Way’

At the same celebration, Grindrod launched The Grindrod Way, an integrated, people-centric model designed to drive customer and operational excellence while maintaining a strong focus on safety, ethics, and values.

Kwazi Mabaso, CEO of Grindrod Bulk Division, explained:

“We are proud to present The Grindrod Way, an integrated model aimed at advancing both customer and operational excellence, while consistently prioritising safety, ethical standards, and our organisational Purpose.”

The framework centers on five pillars: Safety, Values and Ethics, Customer Excellence, Operational Excellence, and Recognition, all geared towards strengthening the company’s culture and performance.

Driving Eswatini’s Export-led Growth

Grindrod’s strategic operations have become a key player in Eswatini’s export strategy. By connecting inland operations with the Port of Maputo, the company is helping drive the nation’s export-led growth, ensuring that goods flow efficiently from rural regions to international markets.

Founded in 1910, Grindrod employs over 4 000 people across more than 20 countries and remains committed to “making a difference in Africa’s trade with the world.”
