Africa-Press – Eswatini. Instacash Managing Director Mandla “Cheeks” Nxumalo has announced the return of the Wild Card feature for the 2026 Instacash/ESSA High School Soccer Tournament, allowing eliminated teams to re-enter the competition through strong fan support demonstrated during match days.
The Wild Card remains a distinctive feature of the Instacash/ESSA High School Soccer Tournament, granting sponsors the discretion to bring back a team that exited the competition in its early stages. Unlike conventional selection methods, this opportunity is not based on results or chance but is driven by the strength of fan mobilisation, with schools required to demonstrate strong supporter turnout to earn a return.
The initiative is designed to boost spectator involvement and sustain excitement throughout the tournament, with the available slot awarded to the team that records the highest match-day attendance. “The Wild Card spot is about attendance and nothing else. The school with the strongest supporter presence will earn the opportunity to return to the competition,” said Nxumalo.
The Wild Card offers a second chance to teams eliminated in earlier stages, with selection based entirely on fan mobilisation rather than performance on the field. He further stated that the selection will not be limited by geography. “Any school from anywhere in Eswatini has a chance if their supporters show up in numbers,” he said.
Evelyn Baring High School was confirmed as the Wild Card team for the 2025 edition following a competitive selection process that also included Swazi National High School and Timphisini High School. The announcement, made by Nxumalo, as reported in an article published by Eswatini Positive News on June 4, 2025, highlighted that the decision extended beyond results, recognising strong supporter turnout, sportsmanship, and school spirit. Evelyn Baring’s consistent participation and loyal fan base played a decisive role in securing the opportunity.
Nxumalo further introduced a new condition for the 2026 edition to ensure fairness and wider participation. He noted that the initiative is aimed at sustaining energy and excitement throughout the tournament while rewarding schools that demonstrate strong community backing. The 2026 tournament will also see the Hhohho region hosting the national semi-finals, adding another layer of anticipation to the competition.“To ensure fairness and give other schools a chance, those that have previously benefited from the Wild Card will not be eligible this year,” he said.
Organisers believe the combination of the Wild Card system and strategic hosting of key fixtures will contribute to higher attendance and a vibrant match atmosphere. The Instacash/ESSA High School Soccer Tournament continues to play a key role in developing young talent, promoting school pride, and strengthening community participation in sport.
With the reintroduction of the Wild Card, the 2026 edition is expected to deliver increased competition, stronger fan engagement, and a more dynamic tournament experience across the country.
