Africa-Press – Eswatini. Young Zesh, one of Eswatini’s most promising musical talents, has over the weekend undergone the traditional Kubutseka ritual under the Mgadlela Enkabezweni regiment, marking a powerful milestone in both his personal and artistic journey.
Deeply rooted in Swazi culture, the Kubutseka rite of passage has spiritually grounded Young Zesh and reshaped his creative vision and identity. Describing the experience, he said, “Kubutseka is a journey of maturity, discipline and identity.” He explained that he chose to undergo this cultural initiation to build a firm spiritual and cultural foundation before taking his music career to new heights.
Reflecting on the process, Young Zesh shared that it humbled him and reminded him of his responsibilities as a young Swazi man. Artistically, the experience has given him “a deeper sense of purpose,” inspiring him to create music that is authentic and truth-driven rather than purely entertaining.
This transformation has ushered in a new chapter for the artist. He now approaches his craft with renewed values, clarity, and energy. “Kubutseka allowed me to live the traditions of my people, not just learn about them,” he said, describing the ritual as a reminder that Swazi culture is “powerful, spiritual and royal.”
The influence of this connection is already shaping his music. While maintaining his signature sound, Young Zesh revealed that his upcoming projects will incorporate more Swazi language, values, and storytelling elements. “My culture is no longer just a theme; it’s my foundation,” he emphasized. Fans can expect the same vibrant energy, but with added depth, maturity, and cultural resonance.
Addressing the balance between tradition and modernity, Young Zesh dismissed the idea that culture and progress are opposites. “Eswatini’s culture is timeless, not old-fashioned,” he said. By fusing modern beats and visuals with Swazi authenticity, he aims to stand out rather than blend in. “I don’t want to fit in; I want to stand out,” he added confidently.
To the youth of Eswatini, Young Zesh shared a message of empowerment: “Kubutseka does not limit your dreams; it strengthens them. Being modern without roots is dangerous, you get lost easily.” He encouraged his peers to embrace their heritage fearlessly, proving that one can be both traditional and global.
“Kubutseka is empowerment, not restriction,” he concluded. “Be proud. Be bold. You can be cultural and successful. I’m living proof.”
