Africa-Press – Eswatini. The Matsapha Town Council has unveiled an ambitious and forward-looking infrastructure development programme, highlighted by an estimated E80 million medical waste incineration facility, as the town continues to strengthen its position as a modern, well-planned industrial and commercial hub.
The developments were revealed during a media breakfast hosted by the council at the Matsapha Town Council chambers earlier today. The engagement was aimed at strengthening relations with the media and promoting transparency and regular information sharing on matters of public interest.
Addressing the media, Acting Town Clerk and Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Manqoba Zwane outlined Matsapha’s growth trajectory and key development priorities over the next five years. The briefing also marked Zwane’s formal introduction as Acting CEO, with the council emphasising a renewed leadership focus on service delivery, infrastructure expansion and stronger stakeholder engagement.
At the centre of the town’s development drive is the medical waste incineration facility, valued at approximately E80 million. Construction of the facility began about six months ago and is already nearing completion. Once operational, it is expected to significantly improve the safe handling and disposal of medical waste, strengthening environmental health standards not only in Matsapha but also in surrounding areas.
Zwane described the project as a critical investment in public health and environmental protection, noting that it aligns with national and regional efforts to improve waste management systems while supporting industrial growth.
In addition to the incineration facility, the Acting CEO highlighted several other key infrastructure projects currently underway or in the planning stages. These include the construction of a five-hectare bus rank, designed to improve public transport coordination, enhance commuter safety and reduce congestion within the town centre.
Ongoing road rehabilitation works across Matsapha were also noted as part of the council’s commitment to maintaining reliable and efficient transport networks that support both residents and businesses.
One of the most anticipated projects is a new connecting road linking the Matsapha industrial area directly to Mahlanya. The road will provide an alternative route, removing the need for traffic to pass through Mahhala. According to Zwane, this development is expected to significantly improve traffic flow, reduce travel time, and enhance efficiency for industries operating within the Matsapha industrial site.
Following the media briefing, journalists were taken on a guided tour of several strategic locations around Matsapha. These included Silent Park, Matalatala Road, and the incineration facility site, where council officials provided on-site updates on construction progress, timelines and future plans.
The media breakfast concluded with an interactive discussion session, allowing journalists to engage directly with council leadership on development priorities, operational challenges and the long-term vision for Matsapha.
Zwane reaffirmed the council’s commitment to inclusive development and transparent governance, noting that infrastructure-led growth remains central to Matsapha’s transformation agenda. With major projects nearing completion and new ones on the horizon, Matsapha continues to position itself as a key driver of industrial growth, investment and sustainable urban development in Eswatini.
