LINDIWE DLAMINI ELECTED MAYOR, VOWS TO TURN MATSAPHA INTO A MODEL TOWN

Africa-Press – Eswatini. There is a new boss in Matsapha as Councillor Lindiwe Dlamini has officially taken the mayoral seat following a calm but decisive election at the council chambers on Tuesday afternoon.

Dlamini, who now leads one of Eswatini’s most critical urban hubs, stepped into the role with a bold message of unity, compassion and purpose. In her maiden speech, she expressed pride in her appointment and described Matsapha not just as a town, but the heartbeat of Eswatini.

“Matsapha is a living, breathing entity built on the dreams and struggles of its people,” she said, pledging to serve with humility and vision. She said she considered it a great honour to be entrusted with the responsibility to lead a town that plays a central role in the country’s economy and development.

The new mayor outlined her key vision, anchored on compassion-driven leadership, inclusive decision-making and sustainable development. She said it was time for the council to adopt a new culture of public service that is people-focused and responsive.

“As we turn a new page, we must reimagine Matsapha as a place of boundless opportunity, where no voice is too small and no dream too big,” she said.

Dlamini said the council would work closely with residents, business owners and civic organisations to create a culture of transparency, trust and accountability. She revealed plans to host regular community engagements and open forums to allow Matsapha residents to shape policies that affect their lives.

“We must not lead from behind closed doors. Our strength as a town lies in our shared values and collective wisdom,” she told the chamber.

Supporting Dlamini in council leadership is Councillor Siphesihle Cedric Nsibandze, who was elected Vice Chairman. Councillor Boniface Mdluli was named Chairperson of the Finance Committee, with Bongani Mkhatshwa as his deputy. Councillor Mfanufikile Dlamini declined his nomination for deputy mayor, while Councillor Philip Nhlabatsi was also nominated during the peaceful proceedings, which were presided over by Acting Town Clerk Phiwokuhle Dlamini.

The mayor also reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals, with a particular focus on gender equality, community empowerment and access to services.

She urged the council to prioritise infrastructure development, waste management, and the rehabilitation of community spaces. “Let us transform neglected spaces into centres of hope and activity,” she said.

The election result and Dlamini’s message of transformation drew immediate backing from the private sector. Matsapha Ratepayer’s Association Chairman Steven Motsa pledged his association’s support and emphasised the need for cohesion going forward.

Phumelele Motsa, Vice Chairman of the Matsapha Business Forum, echoed those sentiments, calling on businesses to unite behind the new leadership. He also thanked His Majesty King Mswati III for his continued interest in the town’s development.

Ministry of Housing and Urban Development representative Gordon Mbuli congratulated the new mayor, stating the ministry’s support and confidence in the council’s direction under Dlamini. He said the ministry expected improved governance and service delivery going forward.

As the new council leadership settles in, all eyes are now on Mayor Dlamini and her team to deliver on the promises made. For the people of Matsapha, hope has been rekindled and the vision is clear, a united town rising with purpose.
