Major Govt Infrastructure Projects Near Completion in Regions

Africa-Press – Eswatini. The Ministry of Public Works and Transport has made significant progress on several key rural infrastructure projects, with multiple bridges and roadworks across the Shiselweni and Lubombo regions now nearing completion.

The projects, part of a broader national initiative to enhance rural mobility, are reported to be in advanced stages, signalling the government’s push toward delivering on its infrastructure development commitments.

According to the Minister of Public Works and Transport, Chief Ndlaluhlaza Ndwandwe, several low-level crossings and bridge constructions in the Shiselweni region have either been completed or are entering the final stages.

Among these is the Ndabazezwe Low-Level Crossing, which is fully operational. The structure was elevated and reinforced to address the region’s increasingly unpredictable weather patterns and improve year-round access.

“At Mkhwakhweni, the construction of a low-level crossing is nearing completion. The crossing includes spot re-gravelling of critical segments and is expected to alleviate long-standing transportation challenges, particularly during rainy periods,” said the Minister.

He further highlighted that the Mzinsangu Low-Level Crossing, spanning the Mkhokhoba River, is also nearing completion.

This crossing is especially critical as it connects the Mshololo and Mzinsangu communities and provides access to Ndzungunye Primary School. The project includes concrete road approaches on both sides to ensure stability and durability.

Meanwhile, the Mantambe Pier Bridge has reached its final phase. Ministry officials said the bridge has already created a vital link between the Mantambe and Manyandzeni communities. It also enables direct access to key public services, including a health facility and Manyandzeni Primary School.

“These projects represent meaningful progress, we are now transitioning from construction to final inspection phases on most sites,” he said in addition.

Meanwhile, in the Lubombo region, the KaNgaju (Mampempeni) Low-Level Crossing has hit 75% completion. This particular project, the Ministry noted, has made commendable progress and is expected to be completed within the coming weeks.

The crossing will offer safe, year-round access across a seasonal stream that previously left residents cut off during the rainy season.

The Ministry also highlighted the regraveling of a 10-kilometre stretch of road between Lubhuku (Magedeni) and the D44 Dvokodweni feeder road as part of the project. This section is vital for ensuring all-weather access to Mampempeni Primary School and surrounding communities. Work on this road segment is reported to be more than halfway completed.

“These are not abstract targets. Communities are already beginning to feel the change vehicles are moving, schools are accessible, and public transport is returning,” the Minister said.

Another significant development in Lubombo is the ongoing construction of the KaLokhayiza Pier Bridge along the D89 road, linking KaLanga and Jabula.

The project, which began in February, has now reached 35% completion. The scope of this multi-component project includes:

Construction of the pier bridge

Regraveling of a 20-kilometer road

Installation of pipe crossings

Drainage and ancillary works

Installation of road furniture

According to project managers, all components are progressing in tandem. Once completed, this corridor will serve several communities under the Lugongolweni and Mpolonjeni Tinkhundla, including areas surrounding Nyetane High School.

The Minister has emphasised that these projects are part of a long-term investment strategy to improve rural infrastructure and support economic growth.

While timelines have varied depending on weather and terrain challenges, the Ministry said all current works are on track and being closely monitored.

“These projects are not just about concrete and gravel, they are about opening up opportunities for our people, students, traders, and patients. That’s what this work is truly about,” he said.

In its latest update, the Ministry committed to publishing detailed timelines and completion reports once inspections are finalised. Further, maintenance plans are already being drawn up to ensure the sustainability of the infrastructure post-construction.

With several projects now past the halfway mark and some already operational, the government’s infrastructure programme in the Shiselweni and Lubombo regions appears to be delivering tangible results.

As the Ministry moves into the final inspection and handover stages, the emphasis is now on completion, sustainability, and impact.
