Africa-Press – Eswatini. The death of Malkerns police officer Lucky Vilakati has triggered an emotional debate among junior police officers who predicted that, more cops might commit suicide due to frustration as the salary increment delays.
Lucky Vilakati was buried this week, he committed suicide by shooting himself while on duty last week and this, triggered the debate among his colleagues within the Police Service.
“It’s either we keep quiet and commit suicide or fight for the salary increament under Phase two(II)”, a junior cop posted a voice note that triggered a debate with other officers supporting him in the Whatsap group.
Sergeant Dumsile Khumalo, the Secretary General of the Royal Eswatini Police Staff Association(REPOSA) told earlier that, “police officers are facing financial challenges”, frustrated and demotivated.
“Junior police officers are struggling financially and they are demotivated”, she said.
Eswatini junior police officers has been demanding a salary increment from Government for the past ten(10) years and despite being gazetted, the Government has been refusing to release the money due to members of the law enforcement agency.
Police Spokesperson Senior Superintendent Phindile Vilakati recently told the State owned Radio Station that, “those who want or demanding the esalary increment are a minority(lidlandzana)”.
