Africa-Press – Eswatini. Former Deputy Prime Minister of Eswatini, Hon. Themba Nhlanganiso Masuku, has begun his duties in Malawi, actively preparing for the forthcoming 2025 General Election, scheduled for 16 September.

Since his arrival, Hon. Masuku has engaged in high-level briefings and meetings aimed at ensuring a credible and transparent electoral process. He held a working dinner with the SADC Organ Troika, the SADC Electoral Advisory Council (SEAC), and the SADC Secretariat, where he was updated on Malawi’s electoral landscape and preparations.

On the morning of 9 September, he paid a courtesy call on Malawi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Nancy Tembo, who thanked Eswatini for supporting Malawi by leading the SADC Electoral Observation Mission. Minister Tembo highlighted that Malawi, as the current Chair of SADC, is legally barred from observing its own elections, making regional oversight critical.

Later, Hon. Masuku met with Ambassadors and High Commissioners accredited to Malawi, including Commissioner Mlondi Dlamini representing Eswatini from Maputo, Mozambique.

A key activity for the day was presiding over the certification of SADC observers who successfully completed training ahead of their deployment. Observers, including Hon. Dr. Bonginkosi Dlamini from Mhlambanyatsi Inkhundla, are being stationed across Malawi’s 28 districts, with Dr. Dlamini assigned to the Rumphi District in the Northern Region.

The official launch of the SADC Electoral Observation Mission is scheduled for 10 September, which will mark the deployment of 80 observers from ten SADC member states. The mission aims to ensure free, fair, and peaceful elections, reinforcing SADC’s commitment to democratic governance, peace, and stability in the region.
