MINISTER CALLS FOR CREDIBLE PUBLIC SERVANTS TO UPHOLD INTEGRITY

Africa-Press – Eswatini. The Minister of Housing and Urban Development Apollo Maphalala has made a heartfelt call for public servants to act with integrity and credibility, expressing concern over public transport permits sometimes being issued to people who do not meet the required standards.

“I am praying for a day when our country will have public servants who are credible, who do what is on paper, and work according to the Constitution,” the Minister said on December 4, 2024, during the World Sustainable Transport Day event at the Sincephetelo MVA Fund Conference Room in Mbabane.

The Minister highlighted that sustainable transportation is more than just an environmental issue, it is a powerful driver of economic growth. “When people can move easily, safely, and affordably, they can participate more actively in the economy, access opportunities, and improve their quality of life. Public transport is, without question, a catalyst for national growth,” he said.

He also pointed out the many benefits of efficient public transport, noting that it reduces household travel costs, shortens commute times, lowers fuel consumption, decreases carbon emissions, and strengthens resilience to climate change. “Public transportation is the backbone of a modern society. When we strengthen it, we strengthen our country,” he added.

Praising the City of Mbabane, the Minister said, “Your work is a shining example of what can be achieved when planning, vision, and dedication come together. You are not waiting for change—you are leading it.” He urged government, partners, and stakeholders to fully support the city’s urban transport initiatives.

In closing, the Minister thanked everyone who participated in the event and emphasized the collective responsibility of building cities that are inclusive, accessible, safe, and sustainable.

“Let us continue working together to create a future where transportation empowers people, drives development, and enhances the quality of life for all Emaswati,” he said.
