Africa-Press – Eswatini. More athletes will benefit from the continental grant of USD100 000 (approximately E1 850 000) from the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA).
The current US dollar and lilangeni rate is 18.15. This funding is intended to be utilised for national activities by national federations for athlete preparation for games, national training camps for elite athletes, preparation camps for elite athletes, development and talent identification camps for youth athletes.
Vacant
Eswatini Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (EOCGA) CEO Maxwell Jele revealed to members during Saturday’s by-election for the vacant board member seat that the funding was available and associations could apply for it. Jele added that this particular funding would not cover athletes that were already beneficiaries of the Olympic Solidarity funding.
The Olympic Solidary offers Olympic athlete scholarships through all National Olympic Committees (NOCs) around the world.
“These scholarships run from one quadrennial to the next, that is leading to the next Olympic Games. This particular scholarship is aimed at providing high performance athletes the best possible opportunity to qualify for the next Olympic Games with an allocation of US$90 000 (approximately E1 633 500) per year, which equates to USD7 500 (approximately E136 125) per month,” Jele said.
The Olympic Solidarity is a division of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that assists NOCs such as EOCGA to primarily implement athlete development programmes. Funding also caters for training of coaches, sports administrators and promoting the Olympic values.
During the 2021-2024 quadrennial, all national federations on the Olympic programme have access to Olympic Solidarity financial and technical assistance through their NOCs.
