Africa-Press – Eswatini. Expectant mothers are being encouraged to prioritize prenatal health by attending regular pregnancy check-ups, which play a crucial role in ensuring safe deliveries and healthy babies.
A dedicated nurse from the Women and Children Hospital shared insights during an interview with EBIS, highlighting the importance of antenatal care. “Pregnancy care should start as soon as a woman discovers she is pregnant,” she explained. “Early and regular check-ups help monitor the well-being of both the mother and the unborn baby.”
The nurse outlined how antenatal care can detect complications like high blood pressure, diabetes, and infections, which, if untreated, could pose serious risks. “We conduct thorough check-ups, including blood tests and screenings, and also provide essential vaccinations to protect both mother and baby,” she added.
She emphasized that antenatal visits are also an opportunity for expectant mothers, especially first-timers, to learn valuable information. Topics covered include nutrition, healthy lifestyle habits, birth planning, and what to expect during labour and delivery. “We equip mothers with the knowledge they need to care for themselves and to prepare mentally and physically for childbirth,” she said.
Thandeka Dlamini, a young mother, shared her experience: “When I found out I was pregnant, I was unsure of what to do. The nurses supported me throughout. Regular check-ups revealed that I had low iron levels, which were treated early. My baby was born healthy, and I felt well-prepared.”
According to the nurse, the frequency of antenatal visits increases as pregnancy progresses: monthly in the early stages, every two weeks between 36–38 weeks, and weekly after 40 weeks if needed. “For mothers who live far from healthcare facilities, we assist them in making arrangements to stay closer as their due date approaches. Our mission is to ensure every mother has a safe delivery and every baby is born healthy.”
Antenatal care is essential for the well-being of both mother and baby. Expectant mothers are urged to seek early and regular check-ups, follow professional advice, and stay informed to ensure a healthy pregnancy journey and safe delivery.
