Africa-Press – Eswatini. The National Maize Corporation (NMC) hosted a landmark celebration as farmers, government leaders and agricultural partners came together for the NMC Farmers Awards 2025—an evening dedicated to honouring the champions of Eswatini’s farming sector.
Held on 28 November 2025 at Esibayeni Lodge in Matsapha, the ceremony also commemorated NMC’s 40 years of service to the nation, marking four decades of supporting food security and empowering local growers.
The event highlighted the extraordinary achievements of maize and bean farmers whose dedication continues to strengthen Eswatini’s agricultural landscape. NMC Chief Executive Officer, Mavela Vilane, opened the ceremony with a powerful message underscoring the essential role of farmers in national development. Reflecting on the corporation’s 40-year journey, he attributed NMC’s progress to resilience, innovation and the unwavering commitment of farmers across the country.
“It is a pleasure for me to welcome you to the National Maize Corporation Farmers’ Awards—a celebration of excellence, resilience, and progress,” Vilane said. “Our farmers are crucial in ensuring there is enough food to sustain our communities. Their dedication and hard work are essential for food security and the prosperity of our nation.” His remarks set a tone of pride, unity and gratitude that resonated through the room.
Minister of Agriculture, Mandla Thwawuke, also addressed the gathering, reaffirming government’s dedication to strengthening the agricultural sector. He emphasised that food security remains a central national priority and applauded farmers for their consistent contribution to safeguarding the country’s food reserves.
“As we celebrate the achievements of our farmers tonight, we must recognise their invaluable role in securing food for our nation,” he said. “The government is committed to enhancing our agricultural practices and ensuring that our farmers receive the support they need to thrive. Together, we will work towards a future where food security is guaranteed for all Eswatini citizens.”
A highlight of the evening was the announcement of the Outstanding Farmers of the Year, honouring individuals who have demonstrated exceptional performance in maize and bean production. Among the top achievers was Sibonginkhosi Johnson of Sicunusa, who emerged as the Top Maize Farmer after producing an impressive 258.08 tonnes of net mass. In recognition of his achievement, he received E40 000 worth of agricultural inputs—a prize that reflects both his dedication and the awards’ commitment to encouraging sustained excellence.
The ceremony underscored the importance of strong collaboration among farmers, government and development partners in driving long-term agricultural success. As NMC enters its next chapter, the corporation expressed renewed determination to deepen partnerships, improve support systems and continue investing in initiatives that strengthen national food security.
More than just an awards event, the 2025 ceremony served as a collective affirmation of Eswatini’s shared vision for a resilient, productive and food-secure nation. Through unity, innovation and unwavering dedication from farmers, Eswatini continues to move confidently towards a future rooted in sustainable agricultural excellence.
