PM Challenges Graduates to Combat HIV with Discipline

Africa-Press – Eswatini. Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini has challenged graduates to go back to the basics of moral discipline as a way of fighting the spread of HIV and AIDS among young people.

Speaking during the 2025 Limkokwing University of Creative Technology graduation ceremony at Mavuso Trade and Exhibition Centre, the Premier departed from the celebratory tone often associated with such events and delivered a message of urgency and responsibility. He warned that moral decay among the youth is fueling the country’s HIV infections, which remain among the highest in the region.

“Today, it is reported that 4 000 young people are infected with HIV every year in Eswatini,” Dlamini revealed gravely. “These numbers are unacceptable. If you are not careful, you will be part of these statistics even as you graduate today.”

The Prime Minister said the time had come for young people to restore traditional values of good character and self-restraint. He called for a moral renewal anchored in discipline, abstinence, self-respect, delayed sexual debut, and faith-based values.

“The solution to this scourge is about going back to the basics — good character, good behaviour, and living right as young people,” he emphasized. “Let your faith protect you and refuse to engage in casual or transactional sex.”

Dlamini applauded the country’s significant strides toward achieving the 95-95-95 HIV targets but said the ultimate goal must be complete eradication. “Our goal is to have a nation free of HIV and AIDS in our lifetime,” he affirmed.

Linking moral discipline to national development, the Prime Minister said Eswatini’s greatest asset — its youth — must be strong in both mind and body to drive the country’s transformation agenda. “Our young people must lead by example, making choices that build a healthy, visionary nation,” he concluded.
