Africa-Press – Eswatini. For the first time in history, Special Olympics athletes were officially invited to compete at the Region 5 Youth Games and they made it count. Held from July 5 to 12 in Windhoek, Namibia, the 2025 edition of the Games saw athletes with intellectual disabilities not just participating, but soaring beyond expectations and breaking barriers long thought impossible.

Representing Eswatini with unmatched passion and pride, the athletes competed in events such as the long jump and 100m sprint, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the region’s best youth talent. And what a statement they made! Eswatini’s Special Olympics team brought home four medals in a performance that will be remembered for generations.

Shaggon Mohammad leapt his way to silver in the Men’s Long Jump, etching his name into the hearts of many as a symbol of determination. Bafundzile Dlamini’s bronze in the Women’s Long Jump radiated resilience and hope for female athletes across the nation. Meanwhile, Mkhuleko Ndzima delivered a breathtaking double victory securing gold in both the Men’s Long Jump and the 100m dash. His achievements serve as a shining example of what’s possible when talent meets opportunity.

Speaking to this publication national director of Special Olympics Eswatini, Ntombi Nkambule, expressed her excitement stating that the participation of these athletes has boosted the reputation of their organization.

“Participating and winning draw attention for the organisation raising its reputation. These athletes become role models for others with intellectual and developmental disabilities showing what is possible through sports and dedication. Our local competitions are free of charge motivating more people to get involved. This coming weekend we are having 2 groups from the dance competition which was held in June participation at the Eswatini Dance Sport National Challenge at the caritas. We used our competition to identify talents.” Said Nkambule.

This moment is far greater than the medals themselves. It marks a breakthrough in inclusion and a bold declaration that athletes with intellectual disabilities belong on every stage where excellence is celebrated. Their success is proof that with support, dedication, and belief, the seemingly impossible becomes possible.

These young athletes have not only raised the Swazi flag high, but have also inspired a wave of pride, unity, and hope across the Kingdom of Eswatini. Their legacy will empower future generations to dream bigger and aim higher because they have shown us that limits are meant to be broken.
