Africa-Press – Eswatini. YOUTH from KZN get a chance to uplift their lives.
More than 30 youths from various areas in KZN are currently attending a camp to learn skills such as bricklaying, electrification, and cell phone repair.
Mhlabunzima Memela, the Department of Social Development spokesman, stated that the program is part of the department’s ongoing efforts to encourage youth to strive harder and take advantage of initiatives designed to restore their dignity and improve their lives.
“The Department, in collaboration with its social partners, hosts youth camps to provide young people with essential life skills through the Youth Development Centre,” said Memela.
“These camps aim to empower youth, particularly those facing significant challenges, including unemployment and other social ills,” he added.
Among the youth attending the camp are matriculants and individuals recovering from drug addiction.
“The initiative is aimed at allowing the youth to turn their lives around. The youth have been in the camp since last week Monday, and they will finish the learning program on Friday, 12 July. They will receive certificates,” he said.
Memela also noted that the initiative has helped some of the youth secure jobs and is working in collaboration with eZemvelo KZN Wildlife.
“The leadership camp is an important tool used by the Department to bring together young people from different backgrounds and cultures to unite them towards a common goal.
“This partnership allows the department to hold these leadership camps in facilities under the custodianship of eZemvelo Wildlife. The youth get to experience real camping in an outdoor environment while being imparted important life skills that shape them into responsible citizens,” Memela elaborated.
Meanwhile, the Social Development MEC, Mbali Shinga, will visit Sodwana Bay in the Umkhanyakude District on Monday, 8 July.
“MEC Shinga will distribute Social Relief of Distress (SRD) aid to the victims of recent natural disasters in the KwaNibela clan. She will meet with affected families and communities to offer essential support and assistance,” Memela concluded.
“This humanitarian aid distribution is part of a larger initiative to provide relief and restore dignity to those impacted by recent disasters in the area,” he added.
Shinga said he’ll visiting the camp at Sodwana Bay on Monday, 8 July to motivate the young people to value themselves and work on their future.
The Department has been organizing these camps since June, which is the month for the youth. Various districts have had these camps, and the Harry Gwala district was the most recent one to join in.
