Africa-Press – Eswatini. Velaphi Mamba, a human rights defender is now a subject of an investigation after his sentiments calling for democracy while criticizing the institution of the Monarchy.
It has been disclosed that, the Police State Intelligence Unit has been downloading Mamba’s Visionary Perspective Program to analyze if his comments “are not a threat to State security and the institution of the Monarchy”, police sources told this publication.
The Visionary Perspective Program hosted by the Harvard Scholar, is broadcasted every Sunday on Facebook page, focusing on issues of democracy, human rights and the rule of law among others.
Senior Superintendent Phindile Vilakati, the Police Spokesperson, declined to comment.
But the human rights defender said, he was not intimidated by the threats adding that, being monitored by the Intelligence Unit will not stop him from calling for democracy.
“Visionary Perspectives eSwatini was established to heighten public interest, pressure and radical action for the democratization of eSwatini and the restoration of the sovereignty of the people. The Monarchy does not own the country, it is owned by its people. We will work tirelessly to ensure that the people stay informed and are mobilized to usher in a democratic people’s government in the very near future,” he said.
Eswatini is an absolute Monarchy, political parties are banned from participating in elections while human rights defenders, independent journalists and political activists are arrested tortured or even killed for demanding democracy.
Mamba has been monitored by the Intelligence Unit for some time now, his wife and children are in Ireland amid persecution by the State.
