Africa-Press – Eswatini. Families left homeless and vulnerable by the destructive storm of December 2 have begun receiving much-needed relief, as Government and humanitarian partners roll out assistance to help affected communities rebuild their lives.

Deputy Prime Minister Thulisile Dladla, accompanied by the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) and the Baphalali Eswatini Red Cross Society, visited the constituencies of Ndzingeni, Mayiwane and Mhlangatane to deliver roofing materials to families affected by the storm.

The storm caused widespread damage to schools, households, roads, fields and vegetation. Following an official assessment, Government estimated that E76 million will be required for rehabilitation efforts across the country.

Affected households received iron sheets, timber, bags of cement, nails, wires and other essential materials to support the rebuilding of their homes.

The visit began at Ndzingeni, where Mkhulu Aaron Matsebula recounted how strong winds blew off his roof, exposing him and his grandchildren to heavy hail. The damaged iron sheets left the family in a vulnerable situation.

At Mayiwane, Thembekile Dlamini expressed appreciation after receiving materials to rebuild her home, whose roofing was destroyed during the storm.

In Mhlangatane, widow Mamoleleki Ndukuya also received roofing materials after her home was destroyed. Area Member of Parliament Madala Mhlanga reported that 43 affected households in the constituency were supported with food parcels, including rice, beans, sugar and vegetable oil.

Deputy Prime Minister Dladla said she was deeply saddened by the extent of the destruction witnessed in all three constituencies. She explained that current interventions are prioritising the most vulnerable households who have no means to rehabilitate their homes, adding that more families will receive assistance early next year.

NDMA Chief Executive Officer Victor Mahlalela confirmed that 19 households benefited from the day’s intervention. He added that NDMA is expected to assist 100 households, while Baphalali Eswatini Red Cross Society will support 80 households, as relief efforts continue.
