Africa-Press – Eswatini. A group of bright young minds from across the Atlantic has landed on Eswatini soil with sleeves rolled up and hearts in the right place.

Thirteen university students from the United States were warmly welcomed by the Ministry of Economic Planning and Development as they touched down to launch an E550,000 water and sanitation project at Herefords Primary School, under Mayiwane Inkhundla.

Representing Duke University and Cornell University, the group is in the country for eight weeks under the Engineers in Action initiative.

Speaking during the official welcome, Under Secretary in the Ministry of Economic Planning and Development, Siboniso Masilela, expressed sincere gratitude on behalf of the government and the people of Eswatini.

“We thank you for choosing Eswatini. Out of all 54 countries on the continent, you decided to bring your hands, hearts and knowledge here,” he said. “Water is life, and this project will bring lasting impact to children who still walk long distances to unsafe water sources.”

Masilela reminded the students that while their mission is noble, their safety and well-being are also a priority. “Stay productive, stay safe, and enjoy your time in our beautiful Kingdom,” he advised.

The project falls under the W.A.S.H (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) programme, a partnership between the Ministry, Engineers in Action, and Microprojects – a long-standing national programme championing development in schools and rural communities.

Microprojects Director Sibusiso Mbingo was also full of praise. He said many schools in Eswatini still rely on rivers and mountains for water, a challenge that places children’s health at risk. “Your work will make a huge difference,” he told the students. “You could have gone anywhere – but you chose us. That matters.”

Mbingo assured the students that they would not be alone during their stay. “You are the third team of American students to join us this year, and a celebration is already being planned for July to officially welcome all the volunteers and staff,” he added.

For their part, the students were all smiles. They expressed joy at the warm welcome received since arriving last Friday and couldn’t stop gushing about the Kingdom’s food and culture. “We’re so excited to be here. The hospitality has been amazing, and the food is delicious!” one of the students quipped.

They vowed to give their best efforts over the coming weeks, not just
