Africa-Press – Eswatini. Many Emaswati have been eagerly asking one of the biggest questions: What is Butimba?
Butimba means “hunting expedition” in siSwati. Historically, it referred to the King’s royal hunting parties, which symbolized leadership, courage, and provision for the nation. Today, Butimba has evolved into a cultural event that blends traditional significance with modern pride. It serves as a platform for preserving Swazi identity, strengthening social cohesion, and celebrating national heritage.
During Butimba, Libutfo (regiments) join the King in a five-day hunting expedition at the Hlane Royal Residence. Traditionally, the event is held in august every four years. What makes this year’s Butimba unique is that the Libutfo had to wait an extra year after the 2024 edition was postponed. The last Butimba was held in 2019.
Usually, after Butimba, the Libutfo gather at Ngabezweni Royal Residence, where the King commissions the Imbali maidens to fetch the reed. This marks the beginning of the world-renowned Umhlanga Reed Dance Ceremony, which will commence on September 2, 2025.
Highlights of the Butimba Festival:
• The Libutfo sing and dance to traditional hunting songs with the King.
• The King and Libutfo march to the designated hunting zone, officially starting the day’s hunt.
• In the evening, the King and Libutfo return to the Royal Residence with their catch.
• The Libutfo present their catch before the King in a ceremony of honor and unity.
