President Taye Urges Action on Climate Finance Barriers

Africa-Press – Ethiopia. President Taye Atske Silassie urged climate actors to remove bureaucratic barriers that could hinder climate finance progress.

In his address at the official opening of the second UN Climate Week today, President Taye Atske Selassie called upon climate stakeholders to tackle the bureaucratic obstacles that impede climate finance progress.

Highlighting the most significant barrier is the unpredictability and inaccessibility of climate funds, President Taye emphasized the need for pledges to be backed by concrete commitments and funding provisions.

“Many countries are grappling with unsustainable debt levels and an outdated, inequitable global financial system. This makes it nearly impossible to build climate resilience while being burdened by financial constraints,” he stated.

The President outlined a cooperative agenda for climate finance that requires a major rescue strategy and bold measures, particularly for nations in the Global South, where access to adequate funds has been a persistent challenge.

He emphasized support for the Baku to Belém Roadmap, which aims to mobilize 1.3 trillion USD annually by 2030, framing it as a critical investment in the planet’s future.

“Simplified access to funds is essential. I call upon all actors to eliminate the bureaucratic barriers that hinder our progress,” he asserted.

President Taye noted that this Second Climate Week, along with the upcoming African Climate Summit, represents a pivotal moment that will inform future climate summits, including COP30 in Brazil.
