Africa-Press – Ethiopia. Deputy Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Noura Hamladji, has urged the global community to step up climate action and finance, highlighting Africa’s potential to inspire the world through bold and innovative solutions.

Speaking at the Second Climate Week of 2025 in Addis Ababa, Hamladji thanked the Government and people of Ethiopia for hosting the event, emphasizing the country’s longstanding role in regional diplomacy, independence, and sustainable development.

“Addis Ababa today continues to stand tall as the diplomatic capital of Africa — home to the African Union. This is fitting, at this critical juncture in humanity’s climate fight,” she noted.

Hamladji underlined that addressing the climate crisis requires cooperation and solidarity, stressing that Climate Weeks are platforms to “translate pledges into actions and practical solutions that deliver real benefits for communities.”

On climate finance, she called for moving beyond aspirations to implementation.

“The pledge to increase financial flows to developing countries to 1.3 trillion USD annually by 2035 must move beyond aspiration. It must become implementable, it must be delivered faster and designed for purpose,” she said.

Highlighting Africa’s leadership, Hamladji pointed to successful initiatives across the continent, including mini-grid projects in communities, recycling innovations in Kenya’s Kibera, green bonds in South Africa, and Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative, which has already planted billions of trees.

Such bold actions, she said, are “an inspiration for the world” and will bring stronger economic growth, more jobs, cleaner energy, and better health outcomes.

Central to the Climate Week is the Implementation Forum, where policymakers, investors, entrepreneurs, and community leaders are working together to replicate and scale up solutions already delivering results.

Hamladji also underscored the importance of the event’s timing, coming just ahead of the Africa Climate Summit next week and serving as a crucial step toward COP30 in Belém, Brazil.

“Africa is embracing the spirit of mutirao and joining hands with the whole world. So let’s join hands and make this Climate Week count,” she added.
