President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi reiterated Egypt’s interest in reaching a binding deal agreement on filling and operating the GERD (Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam) over the Blue Nile, the Egypt Today monthly magazine highlighted today.
During a phone talk with his South African counterpart, Cyril Ramaphosa, the Egyptian president stressed his country hopes to reach a binding agreement, with clear rules regarding how fast the GERD must be filled and his operation.
Nile´s water is an existential issue for our nation, El-Sisi told Cyril Ramaphosa, also president of the African Union (AU), which sponsored the last rounds of tripartite talks (including Sudan).
Egypt fears that the impementation of the mega-project will limit the flow of the river, which is is insufficient to satisfy over 101 million inhabitants´ demands.
After nine years of controversy and unsuccessful talks, the AU once again called the three parties to meet and talk, working sessions that took place virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Egipto reitera interés en pacto vinculante sobre presa en Nilo
El Cairo, 27 dic (Prensa Latina) El presidente Abdel Fattah El-Sisi reiteró el interés de Egipto en conseguir un trato vinculante sobre el llenado y operación de la gran presa construida por Etiopía en el Nilo Azul, destacó hoy Egypt Today.
Durante una conversación telefónica con su par sudafricano, Cyril Ramaphosa, el mandatario egipcio subrayó que su país aspira a alcanzar un acuerdo sujeto a obligatoriedad, con reglas claras en cuanto a la velocidad a la que deberá llenarse el embalse detrás de la represa y su régimen de funcionamiento, amplió el portal digital.
El agua de El Nilo es una cuestión existencial para nuestra nación, insistió El-Sisi en su diálogo con el también presidente de la Unión Africana (UA), que auspició las últimas rondas de conversaciones tripartitas (incluye a Sudán).
Egipto teme que la puesta en marcha de la megaobra limite el flujo del río, insuficiente ya para satisfacer las demandas de sus más de 101 millones de habitantes.
