Africa-Press – Ethiopia. Addis Ababa, September 7, 2025 (ENA) — Member states of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) urged to establish a clear roadmap for promoting resilient agriculture within the region.
Speaking at a recent multi-stakeholder discussion focused on enhancing agricultural productivity and building resilient food systems, Lire Abiyo, Lead Executive for Soil Resource Development at Ethiopia’s Ministry of Agriculture underscored the importance of collaboration and strategic planning across IGAD countries.
The meeting brought together stakeholders and experts in agriculture, soil science, and sustainability to explore ways to tackle ongoing challenges such as climate variability, recurrent drought, land degradation, and food insecurity.
Lead Executive highlighted the IGAD Fertilizer and Soil Health Hub as a “timely and strategic platform” designed to align with the region’s aspirations and address practical priorities of member states. According to him, this initiative aims to restore soil structure and support long-term agricultural productivity.
“Challenges like climate change and land degradation can only be addressed through integrated platforms that build soil health and ensure food system resilience,” said Lire.
In Ethiopia, significant initiatives have already been undertaken to rebuild resilient agricultural production capacity. One such program is the Summer Irrigation-Based Wheat Development Program, which Lire cited as a successful model for increasing productivity and improving soil health.
These efforts are part of the broader Food Systems Resilience Program, which has played a vital role in addressing the country’s soil fertility challenges. The program promotes a balanced soil management approach that combines organic matter, biological and bio-fertilizers, cover cropping, and selective use of chemical inputs.
Additionally, thousands of smallholder farmers across Ethiopia have been trained in improved soil fertility management techniques, equipping them with the knowledge to sustainably manage their land and boost crop yields
