Over 50 Million Quintals of Wheat Harvested From Irrigation Dev't

Africa-Press – Ethiopia. More than 50 million quintals of wheat has been harvested during the current fiscal year on 1.4 million hectares of land through the nation’s irrigation initiative, the ministry of Agriculture revealed.

Public Relations and Communications Executive Officer at the ministry Kebede Lakew told ENA that the irrigated wheat development was initiated by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

The project was commenced on 3,500 hectares of land on pilot basis in collaboration with Afar Region Agricultural Research Institution, he added.

Citing the PM’s observation about the ample potential of land and water in Afar region, he said the ministry has been working in collaboration with pertinent stakeholders based on the direction given from the premier.

By taking the best experience into other regions from Afar, now irrigated wheat is being developed in 3 million hectares of land, he pointed out.

More than 50 million quintals of wheat has been harvested on 1.4 million hectares of land this Ethiopian Calendar year so far from the current irrigated wheat development initiative, according to the ministry.
