UDP Shortlists Three Candidates for 2026 Election

Africa-Press – Gambia. The United Democratic Party (UDP) has announced the shortlist of three candidates for its flag bearer ahead of the 2026 presidential election. Initially, eleven individuals submitted applications for the position, though Mayor Talib Bensouda later withdrew from the race.

Alagie S. Darboe, the party’s Senior Administrative Secretary, explained that applicants underwent a rigorous process, including interviews, grassroots verifications, and evaluations of leadership, integrity, unity, and electability.

“The subject of the meeting is to discuss and adopt the report of the 13th panel appointed to screen and validate applications, conduct interviews, and prepare detailed assessment reports,” Darboe said.

Following the assessments, only three candidates—ANM Ousainou Darboe, Amadou Sanneh, and Borry S. Touray—met the 60 percent threshold required to advance.

“At the end of the interview, the candidate or applicant has to get 60% before you can pass the threshold and then be part of the possible sublisting,” he added.

Darboe further stated that the central committee has endorsed the panel’s report. The shortlisted candidates are now engaged in a consensus-building process with the party’s council of elders.

“These sub-listed applicants are currently facing the team of the council of elders, who are engaging them in the consensus building,” he said.
