Africa-Press – Gambia. The 2024 draft constitution has provided the president with the flexibility to remove the Inspector-General of Police if they are not effectively carrying out their duties.

The provisions further makes it possible even if their actions did not fall under the specific grounds listed.

According to the government’s explanatory note, the revised draft provided a more comprehensive list of grounds for the removal of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) compared to the 2020 draft.

The government explained that the revised draft expanded list allows for a more thorough evaluation of the Inspector-General’s performance and conduct in office, ensuring that they are held accountable for their actions. In particular, the inclusion of “incompetence” and “any other just cause”.

Furthermore, the revised clause specifies that the removal of the Inspector-General must be on the ground of a serious violation of the Constitution or any other law, which shows a commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that the Inspector-General is held to a high standard of conduct.
