Africa-Press – Gambia. The Bakers Workers Association has announced plans to initiate a nationwide sit-down strike beginning next Sunday, citing low wages and poor working conditions as key grievances.
Amadou Bah, Vice President of the Association, disclosed the decision during an interview with Teranga FM’s Jaye Jallow. He emphasized that the strike comes after failed attempts to address longstanding concerns with employers and union representatives.
“We have difficulties with our work conditions and salaries, Bah said. “Our salaries are very low, and we are experiencing a lot of problems in the course of our work. I have only three hours of rest in 48 hours. Thus, we have discussed with our boss and the Union, and we are informing the general public that we will commence a sit-down strike next Sunday. We will continue the strike if our salaries are not sorted out. If there’s a shortage of bread, this is the cause.”
Bah also highlighted pressing health concerns, stating that many bakery workers are unable to access basic medical check-ups due to financial constraints.
“We also have health issues, even going to the clinic for a check-up is a problem. We want to inform the government about that for them to look into it. In the Gambia, 95 percent eat bread, that’s why our health conditions should be checked,” Amadou Bah said.
The Association has called on relevant stakeholders, including the government and bakery owners, to engage in meaningful dialogue to resolve the matter before the strike commences.
