Barrow Urges NPP Unity, Claims Shared Purpose Makes them Unbeatable for a Thousand Years

Africa-Press – Gambia. President Adama Barrow, leader of The Gambia’s ruling National People’s Party (NPP), has called on party members to remain united in their mission to retain political power. Speaking at the inauguration of the party’s new bureau in Bundung, President Barrow emphasized the importance of solidarity and common purpose among members, citing divine guidance as a source of strength.

“I urge everyone in the NPP to stay united. When you are united with a single intention, no one can dislodge you — not even in a thousand years. This is supported by the words of the Qur’an: when people come together in unity, Allah supports them; but division weakens and destroys,” he said.

Barrow reaffirmed that the party belongs to all its members and stressed equality within its ranks.

“Although I serve as the leader of the NPP, I am not its owner. The party belongs to everyone, regardless of when they joined. We are all equal here,” he noted.

Reflecting on his own political journey, Barrow shared his experience as a long-time member of the United Democratic Party (UDP), where he served for two decades before forming the NPP.

“For 20 years I was a loyal supporter of the UDP. I contributed financially and gave my energy to the party, yet I never had the chance to meet its leader,” he said.

Barrow also recounted his 2007 parliamentary bid in the Jimara constituency under the UDP ticket.

“I didn’t apply to be a candidate—they selected me. The party gave me D12,000, and I covered the rest of the campaign costs myself. I eventually lost that election,” he recalled.

He went on to highlight the lack of financial support he received even after being selected as the coalition presidential candidate in 2016.

“All the support from the diaspora did not reach me directly. I had to carry many of the campaign responsibilities on my own,” he added.

Addressing recent calls for his removal, President Barrow questioned the motives and courage of his critics.

“Those calling for my removal today did not have the courage to stand up to Yahya Jammeh. Now they sit in the background, claiming the president is afraid. But if the NPP remains united, who can remove me?” he asked.

Barrow urged party members to continue building the party’s legacy, even beyond his leadership.

“Even when I am no longer here, I want you to continue building this party. I have the vision, but my role has a limit. I will not seek another position or join another party. The journey must continue with you,” he said.

He emphasized that the inauguration of the party’s new political bureau marks the beginning of the NPP’s 2026 presidential campaign.

“This is the foundation of our campaign. Starting today, I want everyone to begin mobilizing. Travel across the country, speak to the people, and campaign with confidence. We are telling the truth, and when you speak the truth, you should never be afraid,” he concluded.
