Africa-Press – Gambia. In a major boost to higher education funding, the Brikama Area Council (BAC) has disbursed over D2.7 million in tuition payments to the University of The Gambia (UTG), offering scholarship support to more than 70 students for the 2025 academic year.
The funding—amounting to D2,728,476—is part of a broader scholarship initiative championed by the Council, which has prioritized education as a pillar of its regional development strategy. The initiative aims to reduce financial barriers and expand access to quality tertiary education in the West Coast Region and beyond.
According to BAC officials, the UTG sponsorship is just one component of an extensive education support program. This year, the Council is providing scholarships to students enrolled in a variety of institutions, including the Management Development Institute (MDI), Gambia College, and private universities such as the American International University West Africa (AIUWA).
In total, more than 600 students across both public and private tertiary institutions will benefit from BAC’s scholarship program this year -Council official said.
Scholarship recipients were selected based on academic merit and financial need, with the Council emphasizing its commitment to equitable access to educational opportunities. For many students, this support may determine whether they can continue their studies or are forced to postpone their academic goals due to financial constraints.
Amid rising costs of tertiary education, the Brikama Area Council’s intervention is being hailed as a model for how local governments can play a transformative role in addressing the challenges facing students and families nationwide.
