Africa-Press – Gambia. The Confederation of Gambian Industries (CGI) has commended President Adama Barrow and his administration for prioritizing rural electrification.

The confederation describes the initiative as a key driver of inclusive national development as the Gambia Rural Electrification Project enters its final phase.

In a statement issued out recently, CGI said limited access to reliable electricity had historically widened the gap between urban centres and rural communities, affecting education, healthcare services, safety and economic opportunities.

According to the organization, ongoing electrification efforts have begun to transform rural areas, with improved access to lighting, food preservation, information and communication tools, and enhanced support for small businesses, agro-processing, and cottage industries.

CGI notes that extending electricity to rural communities represents a strategic step towards balanced development, adding that access to reliable power can help unlock productivity, entrepreneurship and job creation in underserved areas.

While welcoming the progress made, the organization urged the government to consider reducing electricity tariffs, particularly for rural households and small-scale enterprises, arguing that affordability is essential to maximize the benefits of electrification and support industrial growth.

“Electricity is not a luxury; it is a catalyst for development,” CGI said, adding that ensuring accessible pricing would further strengthen the impact of ongoing investments in energy infrastructure.

The group also emphasized the need for sustained investment in the energy sector to accelerate industrialization, reduce rural-urban migration and promote inclusive economic growth.
