Africa-Press – Gambia. With support from Comium Gambia, the “Allen Street Dembaa” group over the weekend organized a major cleaning exercise to improve their neighbourhood.
For nearly four years, the group has been actively promoting community engagement and on Saturday its members organized the cleaning exercise
Chaired by Modou N. Savage a Banjul resident who has been at the forefront of mobilizing volunteers for community initiatives, members, including Dawda Samba, joined the effort, clearing debris, litter, and other waste along the busy street.
Speaking to journalists, Chairman Modou N. Savage emphasized the group’s commitment to civic responsibility. “For almost four years, we have asked ourselves, ‘What can we do for our country?’ Cleaning our streets is one way to make a tangible difference,” he said.
The exercise received vital support from Comium Gambia, which provided funding, T-shirts, and additional resources, while the National Environment Agency (NEA) contributed cleaning materials to ensure the success of the initiative.
Alagie Sarr, the elected councillor of the area also joined the effort. He lauded the group’s dedication and highlighted the importance of citizen-led initiatives. “It is the responsibility of every resident to keep our environment clean. I am proud to see community members leading by example,” he remarked.
The “Allen Street Dembaa” group hopes their action will inspire other neighbourhoods across Banjul to take part in similar exercises, promoting cleaner streets and fostering a greater sense of communal pride.
