Copg Raises Concern over Tango’S Alleged Lack of Engagement

Africa-Press – Gambia. The Coalition of Progressive Gambians (CoPG) has expressed concern over what it describes as the continued absence of response from the Association of Non-Governmental Organisations (TANGO) to its documented requests seeking engagement and clarification.

In a formal letter signed by its Secretary-General, Celestine Kujabi, and seen by The Voice, CoPG stated that it formally applied for registration with TANGO last year and subsequently submitted several follow-up communications in good faith. According to the group, these communications sought updates, guidance and institutional engagement in line with TANGO’s mandate.

CoPG says that to date, it has received no official acknowledgement or explanation regarding its requests.

“Against this background, CoPG notes with concern that TANGO is proceeding with preparations to host and celebrate awards scheduled for 13 February 2026, while unresolved registration and engagement requests from civil society actors continue to remain unattended,” the coalition stated.

The coalition acknowledged the importance of recognising positive contributions within the civil society sector but stressed that such initiatives should not come at the expense of responsiveness, accountability and institutional duty towards organisations seeking legitimate engagement and support.

It further maintained that an umbrella body for civil society derives its credibility not only from public events but also from consistent, transparent and timely communication with stakeholders. The group added that prolonged silence on formal correspondence, particularly on registration matters, raises questions about institutional priorities and practices.

CoPG called on TANGO to acknowledge and respond to its outstanding correspondence, provide clarity on the status of registration applications, and reaffirm its commitment to equitable and professional treatment of civil society organisations.

According to CoPG, the statement was issued in the public interest and reflects its commitment to transparency, accountability and constructive institutional dialogue. The coalition says it remains open to engagement and hopes the matter can be resolved through professional and timely communication.
