Africa-Press – Gambia. In collaboration with the Gambia Tourism Board (GTBoard), the National Association of Nigeria Travel Agencies (NANTA), on Wednesday kicked off a two-day International Travel and Tourism Conference (ITTC) to promote tourism destination Gambia, held from May 8 to 29, 2025 at Tamala Resort, Kotu.

Speaking on behalf of Honourable Abdoulie Jobe, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC), Mrs. Amie Njie-Joof, Permanent Secretary at the MOTAC delivered heartfelt welcome remarks that set the tone for the two-day event.

She described the summit as a “milestone event in the annals of the Gambian tourism sector,” underscoring its roots in a successful series of tourism collaborations, including the first Familiarization (FAM) Trip in Nigeria and a high-level outreach mission to Nigeria by The Gambia’s tourism leadership.

“This gathering is the result of high-level engagements and strategic partnerships,” Njie-Joof said. “We are, truly honoured to welcome you to the Smiling Coast of Africa. You are home away from home.”

PS Njie-Joof emphasized the human-centered nature of Gambian tourism, which thrives on cultural exchange, hospitality, and culinary richness.

She encouraged members of the NANTA to explore the country’s historical treasures such as Kunta Kinteh Island and the WASSU Stone Circles, as well, as to indulge in local delicacies like Benechin, Domoda, and the seasonal abundance of sweet mangoes.

She acknowledged the evolving dynamics of global tourism, noting that rapid technological advancements and environmental challenges are reshaping the industry.

The PS called for strategic collaboration among stakeholders to adapt to these changes and to reposition tourism in Africa on a more competitive global footing.

Despite these shifts, she reaffirmed the enduring importance of travel agencies: “You remain pivotal in the tourism ecosystem. Your expertise and networks are essential for our shared growth.”

Also addressing the gathering was Mr. Sheriff Conteh, Deputy Director General of the Gambia Tourism and Hospitality Institute (GTHI), who warmly welcomed the Nigerian delegation and praised the event as both a knowledge-sharing platform and a cultural experience.

“This summit marks the culmination of a journey of friendship and collaboration,” Conteh said. “We hope that what you gain in knowledge here is matched by the memories you take home of our culture and hospitality.”

The summit featured powerful speeches and insights from other dignitaries including Malleh Sallah CEO of Djeliba Leisure Group, Yinka Folami, President of NANTA, and representatives of the Nigerian High Commission to The Gambia.

Each speaker echoed a common theme: The need for stronger African tourism alliances to build a more resilient and interconnected industry.

The NANTA Gambia Summit 2025 is not just a meeting of travel professionals, it is a celebration of unity through tourism and a bold step toward deeper economic and cultural integration between The Gambia and Nigeria.
