Gambia Bureau of Statistics (Gbos) Expected to Know Census Results within 3 Months

Africa-Press – Gambia. Mr Nyakassi MB Sanyang, the Statistician General of the Gambia Bureau of Statistics (GBoS) has revealed that his office is expected to release the results of the 2024 census within three months of the past.

In an exclusive interview, Mr Sanyang said compared to the past where it took the Gambia Bureau of Statistics (GBoS) a minimum of 4 years before the data results were published, he said that due to the introduction of digitalization, they expect to have the census results within the next three months, with improved reporting compared to the past.

He said the GBoS is doing everything possible to ensure that information reaches its destination and that reports are produced as quickly as possible.

“The process was long and tedious during the traditional paper census. We used to collect the data on paper, edit it, then pass it to the data entry worker, and the data would go through a process of editing and analysis,” -he remembered.

To achieve these current objectives, Mr Sanyang urged Gambians to welcome their enumerators in order to have quality data, specifying that such data helps the government and development partners. He added that bad data affects the progress of a country.

Mr Sanyang expressed his opinion on the progress of the census. He said it was progressing well and much progress had been made over the past week. He added that the entire census should be completed within three weeks.

According to Mr Sanyang, the GBoS encounters some difficulties, such as access to the homes of members of the highest echelons of Gambian society. “It is difficult to access their residences. Some of them are not at home, and others only have their property titles. Others are there, but it is difficult to access them,” he said.

However, he welcomed the digitalization of the process, believing that it is a great achievement which would greatly contribute to the improvement of the data collected. He expressed optimism that with digitalization, the data collected will be of much better quality than in the past.

He urged rural communities to be more cooperative in providing information than urban communities, due to the busy schedules of city dwellers.

He also deplored the fact that some people refuse to reveal the exact number of their offspring, because they consider it a taboo subject.

“But we try to use all means of communication to raise awareness. However, it is very difficult to establish lines of communication with some people, because they do not even have time to listen to the radio or television.
