Africa-Press – Gambia. The Government of The Gambia has expressed deep sorrow following the tragic death of 19-year-old Gambian national, Abdoulie Bah, who was fatally shot by Spanish police in Las Palmas, Spain, on Saturday, May 17, 2025.
In a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, authorities confirmed that Mr. Bah was reportedly shot near Gran Canaria Airport after allegedly attacking a taxi driver with a knife. According to preliminary information received by the Ministry, Mr. Bah was believed to be suffering from acute mental distress and had been diagnosed with schizophrenia.
“The Government of The Gambia deeply regrets the loss of a young life under such tragic circumstances and stands in solidarity with Mr. Bah’s grieving family and the wider Gambian community in Spain. We extend our heartfelt condolences and prayers for the peaceful repose of his soul,” the statement read.
The Ministry noted that it has formally communicated its concerns to the Spanish authorities and is demanding a full and transparent investigation into the incident.
“In response to the incident, the Ministry through The Gambia Embassy, Madrid has formally expressed its grave concern to Spanish authorities, particularly regarding the apparent use of lethal force. A demand has been made for a thorough, transparent and independent judicial investigation into the events that led to Mr. Bah’s death,” the statement continued.
As part of its response, the Government has dispatched the Deputy Head of Mission from its Madrid Embassy to Las Palmas to liaise with local authorities and community representatives.
“As a demonstration of the Government’s commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of Gambian citizens abroad, the Embassy in Madrid is sending the Deputy Head of Mission to Las Palmas to engage with local authorities and community leaders,” the statement said.
The statement also confirmed that the Gambian Embassy is coordinating closely with Mr. Bah’s family to facilitate the swift repatriation of his remains, in accordance with Islamic funeral rites.
The Ministry affirmed its ongoing commitment to safeguarding the rights and dignity of Gambians abroad and pledged to monitor developments in the investigation closely. It also emphasized the importance of working with host nations to prevent such incidents in the future.“We reaffirm our commitment to the safety and well-being of all Gambians in the diaspora and to continue collaboration with host countries to uphold the values of human rights and justice,” the Ministry stated.
Updates will be provided to the public as new information becomes available regarding the investigation and repatriation process.
