Africa-Press – Gambia. The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) has intercepted 29 migrant boats from January to November, the department’s deputy PRO informed.

According to GID’s Deputy PRO Inspector Muhammad Bah, the boats were intercepted before the launch of Operation Zero Departure.

“We have 29 interceptions from January to date, which shows that we have done a lot of live-saving activities within this period,” PRO Bah revealed in an exclusive interview.

He explained that the GID is not preventing anyone from migrating but added that people must be stopped from embarking on dangerous migratory routes.

When asked whether the operations will continue, Inspector Bah said the government, IOM, and Red Cross are giving “maximum support” but said whether the interceptions will continue or not is an internal matter.

“But from here to January 2024, we are on the field,”he clarified.
