Africa-Press – Gambia. The Gambia Livestock Marketing Agency (GLMA) has issued a stern warning to unregistered livestock dealers operating around the Abuko and Cashew abattoirs, following concerns that they have been obstructing licensed traders.
The warning came during a stakeholders’ meeting convened by the GLMA in collaboration with the National Livestock Owners Association and the management of Abuko Abattoir. The session also included representatives from the Anti-Crime Unit of the Gambia Police Force to address illegal trading practices at the main entrances of the two abattoirs.
Speaking after the meeting, GLMA Director General Momodou Darboe described the engagement as timely and emphasized the agency’s mandate to promote and regulate livestock marketing in a safe and conducive environment. He commended Alhaji Musa Njie, President of Abuko Abattoir, for promptly reporting incidents where unregistered individuals allegedly overcharged customers outside the abattoir gates.
Darboe assured that the GLMA, in partnership with the Anti-Crime Unit, will maintain constant monitoring to safeguard lawful business operations and foster a positive working relationship between licensed dealers and butchers.
Ebrima O. Jallow, President of the National Livestock Owners Association, highlighted the importance of dialogue in building consensus among stakeholders and promoting stability in the livestock trade. He thanked the Office of the President and the police for their proactive role in protecting legitimate business and urged all stakeholders to collaborate in preventing interference by unregistered dealers.
Jallow called on all parties to “put hands on deck” to maintain discipline and ensure fair and orderly livestock marketing.
