Africa-Press – Gambia. Tracing the historical journey of the Fulani people from ancient Babylon to Fuuta Jalon has been officially launched in The Gambia. The author describes the work as a profound of reimagining West African history and identity.
From Babylon to Fuuta Jalon, authored by Dr. Abu Bakary Jallow, was unveiled on Friday, 18 July 2025, at the Ebunjan Theatre in Kanifing. This 167-page volume, comprising 22 chapters, integrates historical research, cultural reflection, and personal narrative to challenge entrenched perceptions about the Fulani’s origins and their significant role in Africa’s intellectual and political history.
Speaking at the launch, Dr. Jallow emphasized that the book transcends a conventional memoir. “It is a historical exegesis, a cultural manifesto, and a personal reckoning,” he stated. Drawing from oral traditions, he traced the Fulani lineage back to Abraham, following waves of migration shrouded in silence and survival, linking them to Babylonian and North African roots.
Dr. Jallow described the book as “an act of memory and resistance,” confronting colonial distortions and the internalization of alienation. He underscored the prominence of the Islamic Republic of Fuuta Jalon, portraying it as “a sanctuary of learning” rather than a caliphate of conquest, thereby reasserting its historical significance.
“This book represents our effort to reclaim our narrative,” Dr. Jallow remarked. “It reminds us that we are shaped by journeys, baptized by memories, and enshrined in stories. May we never forget.”
He further noted that the Gambian launch is part of an international tour that has taken the book to audiences in New York, Atlanta, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Mali, and now Kanifing each event fostering a shared appreciation for cultural heritage and legacy.
Concluding the event, Dr. Jallow called on scholars, students, and community members to document their histories with dignity and to liberate minds from distorted historical accounts.
The launch attracted a diverse audience, including students, academics, and community elders, who lauded the book as a timely and inspiring contribution, particularly for the emerging generation seeking to reconnect with their roots.
