Africa-Press – Gambia. The Gambia Immigration Department (GID), has revealed that citizens of Nigeria and Guinea Conakry living in The Gambia will no longer be given residential permits but rather get Non-Gambian ID cards.
In a media chart with The Voice, Inspector Lowe stressed that Non-Gambian ID Card is a document given to citizens of countries that have bilateral agreements with the The Gambia.
The Gambia Immigration Department issued an official statement on 16 July 2025 confirming the change, which was introduced by Ministerial Directive from the Ministry of Interior. The directive, sent via correspondence Ref. No. MIC 274(129-LJG) on 14 July 2025, mandates that all ID card processing centers begin issuing Non-Gambian ID cards to Nigerian and Guinean nationals in place of residence permits.
Previously, Non-Gambian ID cards were issued only to nationals of Senegal, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, and Guinea Bissau.
“With the latest directive, Nigeria and Guinea Conakry have now been added to that list,” Inspector Lowe confirmed.
The new system, which took immediate effect, requires eligible Nigerians and Guineans to obtain a Non-Gambian ID card at a cost of D750. The card is valid for one year and will be renewed annually unless policy changes are made.
“This card effectively replaces the need for residential permits for Nigerians and Guineans,” Inspector Lowe explained. “They will no longer need to apply for Permit A or Permit B. All other immigration processes remain the same, except for the type of document issued and its associated fee.”
Permit A and B will still be available for nationals of ECOWAS and non-ECOWAS countries that do not have bilateral agreements with The Gambia, he clarified.
