Africa-Press – Gambia. Sering Modou Njie, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Gambians Abroad, has reiterated The Gambia’s unwavering commitment to global peace and the elimination of nuclear weapons during an event marking the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons, held on the sidelines of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
In his statement, Minister Njie underscored the catastrophic humanitarian and environmental consequences of nuclear weapons, stressing the urgent need for their complete eradication.
He highlighted The Gambia’s strong stance on disarmament, pointing to the country’s ratification of both the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) and the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) as tangible demonstrations of its commitment.
The minister further called for greater international cooperation, mutual trust, and universal adherence to disarmament treaties as essential steps toward achieving a nuclear-free world.
“The Gambia’s fervent wish is to one day live in a world where all weapons of mass destruction cease to exist, so that humanity will no longer be threatened,” Minister Njie stated.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also reaffirmed this commitment on its official social media platforms, emphasizing The Gambia’s readiness to work closely with the global community to advance nuclear disarmament and safeguard international peace and security.
